He spends his days forging art from metal, whistling melodies that fill the air with an inexplicable joy. His laughter is infectious, and his work is unrivaled, sought after by those who recognize the beauty and precision of his creations.
But beneath his rugged exterior and charismatic smile, Gus harbors a secret that transcends his life as a blacksmith. Gus is a master of an entirely different craft—a hidden talent that reveals a deeper, more complex side of his character.
"Tunesmith" takes us on a journey into the soul of a man who defies the stereotypes imposed by his outward appearance. Through Gus’s story, the film explores the multidimensional nature of identity, challenging our perceptions and inviting us to consider the hidden depths within each person we encounter.

Director's Statement
The Story Behind The Story
In 2018, I was on the hunt for an idea for my first film. Every time I thought I had found one, I’d dive in headfirst, fall in love with it, and start writing. Things seemed to be going well, but then I’d set it aside for a week or two. When I’d come back to read what I’d written, I’d hate it. It all felt forced, empty, like there was no real reason behind it—no spark, no lesson to hold onto.
Then, in 2019, I went back to my hometown, Popayán, Colombia, for my wedding. My wife Julia and I decided to get married there because it's where most of our family and closest friends are. During that trip, I reconnected with an old friend from university, Gus. What I discovered about his life completely blew me away. In that moment, I knew I had found the story I was searching for. It wasn’t just any story—it was the story. The kind of story that inspires, surprises, and humbles you. I knew I had to turn it into a film. The world needed to hear about Gus.
Gus is a simple, humble man with a side of him that few people ever see, a side that would inspire anyone lucky enough to get a glimpse of it. Over the next two years, Gus and I brainstormed ways to bring his story to life. We worked on how to distill his story into something that could convey the depth of his inspiration, his charisma, and his joyful, uncomplicated approach to life.
Then, two years ago, I grabbed my camera, packed my bags, and headed back to Popayán. One morning, I woke up early and followed Gus as he started his day. I hit the record button, and I never really stopped filming after that.
So often, we create tributes to people after they’re gone. I’m grateful I was able to capture Gus’s life while he’s still here to witness it. But this film isn’t just for him or for me—it’s for everyone. I want people to experience the gift of knowing Gus, even if it’s just for 26 minutes. I hope it inspires people to chase their dreams, to embrace their hidden talents, and to let those talents soar.
